2205 (S31803, F51, 1.4462) two-phase stainless steel overview:
2205 (S31803, F51, 1.4462) two-phase steel is a new product successfully developed in 2000. 2205 two-phase steel is a kind of two-phase stainless steel with nitrogen added (2205 two-phase steel for short). 2205 two-phase steel is a compound stainless steel composed of 21% chromium,2.5% molybdenum and 4.5% nickel-nitrogen alloy.
The existing 2205 dual-phase steel products include welded pipe, seamless pipe, steel plate, bar, forging material, strip and so on.
Early duplex stainless steels can withstand uniform corrosion and chlorine stress corrosion cracking at moderate strength, but their performance is greatly reduced when used in welding situations.
To improve this situation, 2205 two-phase steel is added to nitrogen, which not only improves corrosion resistance, but also makes the welding condition very good.
It has high strength, good impact toughness and good overall and local stress corrosion resistance.
The yield strength of 2205 duplex steel is twice that of austenitic stainless steel, a property that allows designers to design products with less weight, giving the alloy a price advantage over 316,317 L.
This alloy is particularly suitable for the temperature range of -50°F/+600°F.
This alloy may also be considered for applications beyond this temperature range, but there are some limitations, especially when applied to welded structures.
Due to the special properties and characteristics of 2205 duplex steel, it is widely used.

Physical and mechanical properties of duplex stainless steel:
1. 2205 (S31803, F51, 1.4462) dual-phase steel density: 8.0g/cm3.
2. 2205 (S31803, F51, 1.4462) two-phase steel tensile strength: σb≥620Mpa.
2205 (S31803, F51, 1.4462) two-phase steel yield strength: σ0.2≥450Mpa
4. Elongation of 22205 (S31803, F51, 1.4462) duplex steel elongation:δ ≥25%.
2205 (S31803, F51, 1.4462) two-phase stainless steel corrosion resistance:
1. Uniform corrosion: due to the chromium content (22%), molybdenum (3%) and nitrogen content (0.18%) of 2205 dual-phase steel, the corrosion resistance of 2205 is better than 316L and 317L in most environments.
2. Local corrosion resistance: the content of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen in 2205 dual-phase steel makes it highly resistant to spot corrosion and gap corrosion in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
3, stress corrosion resistance: 2205 dual-phase steel dual-phase microstructure is helpful to improve the stress corrosion cracking resistance of stainless steel.
Under certain conditions of temperature, strain, oxygen and chloride, the chloride stress corrosion of austenitic stainless steel will occur.
As these conditions are not easily controlled, the use of 304L, 316L and 317L is restricted in this respect.
4. Corrosion fatigue resistance: 2205 dual-phase steel has high corrosion fatigue strength due to its high strength and corrosion resistance.
2205 (S31803, F51, 1.4462) duplex stainless steel structure:
The ideal microstructure of 2205 (S31803, F51, 1.4462) duplex steel can be obtained after solid melt annealing treatment of 1900°/1922°F (1040°/1080°C).
If the heat treatment temperature is higher than 2000°F, it may lead to an increase in ferrite composition.
Like other duplex stainless steels, 2205 duplex steels are susceptible to intermetallic phase precipitation.
The intermetallic phase precipitated between 1300°F and 1800°F, and the precipitation rate was the fastest at 1600°F.
2205 (S31803, F51, 1.4462) duplex stainless steel processing properties:
1. Thermal forming: it is recommended that the forming should be done at a temperature below 600°F.
During the thermoforming process, the whole workpiece shall be heated as a whole and shall be carried out in a temperature range from 1750°F to 2250°F, at which temperature 2205 duplex steel is very soft.
If the temperature is too high, 2205 duplex steel is prone to thermal tearing.
Below this temperature, the austenite breaks.
Below 1700°F, the metal meets quickly due to temperature and deformation.
After the thermoforming is completed, it shall be immediately annealed and quenched at a minimum temperature of 1900°F to reduce its phase balance, toughness and corrosion resistance.
Stress relief is not recommended, but if it is necessary, the material should be soldered at a minimum temperature of 1900°F, followed by rapid cooling and water quenching.
2. Cold forming: 2205 two-phase steel can be cut and cold formed.
However, due to the high strength and hardness of 2205 duplex steel, it needs to be cold formed more than austenitic steel, and due to its high strength, the resilience factor should be fully considered.
3. Heat treatment: 2205 duplex steel shall be annealed at a minimum temperature of 1900°F, and then rapidly cooled to water quenching.
This treatment is applied to solid - melt annealing and stress relief.
Stress relief treatment at temperatures below 1900°F can easily lead to the precipitation of harmful metal or non-metal phases.
4. Mechanical machinability: on high-speed machine tools, the feed rate and cutting speed of 2205 dual-phase steel are the same as that of 316L.
If the carbonization knife is used, the cutting speed is reduced by about 20% compared with 316L. The performance of the machine and its components plays a key role here.
5. Welding: the weldability of 2205 alloy is very good.
The performance of 2205 dual phase steel is that the welded metal and thermal deterioration parts still retain the same corrosion resistance, strength and toughness as the base metal.
It is not difficult to weld 2205 two-phase steel, but the welding procedure should be designed to maintain a good phase balance after welding, so as to avoid the precipitation of harmful metal phase or non-metal phase.
